Chapter 23

My time spent between going through the security checkpoint and boarding the flight turned into a veritable history lesson. While Visha and Kismet discussed logistics, snippets of their conversation became the fuel for Impy to teach me about the Seelie. Apparently, all the courts except the Oceanic Court were in Old Europe. It made sense because the humans’ Renaissance was picking up steam in the 1400s and 1500s—and that was where the High Fae wanted to be. Other species ruled the rest of the world at that point.

The Seelie delighted in the wars of Europe, and partook in progressing the humans arts and sciences, and even literature. Although each Court ruled from a different seat, their subjects used to stay in one area or another. Now, their subjects were scattered and intermingled, and chaos ruled supreme among them. Kismet thought it would be interesting to watch how the Courts restructured themselves as they regained control.

After the fall of Rome, the Seasonal Court took the northern island region of the collapsed Empire which became known as Britannia. They’d ruled from a centralized position on the island, not caring for the humans’ preference for London after the Earls lost to the Saxons. Thus, upon landing from our transatlantic flight, we would drive to a location outside of Northampton, then take off on foot into the slightly wooded, mostly agricultural countryside.

Visha had asserted herself as a military leader and was ensuring the movement of the troops to this part of the country. Kismet had glamoured the airport into allowing nylae on the flight, so we didn’t land without a guard. It had been fascinating to watch the humans’ eyes grow hazy, and then once fully charmed, they allowed a good portion of the plane to be filled with our troops. Several platoons of nylae would meet us in Northampton, and Visha and Kismet were busy arguing about how many would be necessary right now.

As I sipped a soda water with lime in the first-class lounge before boarding our flight, I took in all that I’d learned. I kept casting furtive glances at Visha, but she was too absorbed with the technicalities of moving a large body of troops across the Atlantic to catch my eye. I realized that in the short time we’d been with the Elemental Prince, Visha and Kismet had bonded in a friendly fashion. However, I doubted if they would ever be truly capable of working together what with the breadth of their differently viewpoints. They watched each other, stealing shrewd glances, and at every opportunity they questioned and pressed an alternative idea on one another.

They had bickered the whole way onto the plane, and then had to wait until we were in the air to access the in-cabin Wi-Fi to finish their momentous job. Meanwhile, I had my own task to occupy my time, because no sooner had I boarded the plane than I reached for the complimentary eye mask and earphones. I used the media console in front of me to put the music on and kicked back in my seat, shutting my eyes.
